Chapter 39 - Setting the Record for the Worst Luck
As before, scoring 4 points in the Earth-Rock Conversion Spell wasn't reflective of its true difficulty level in the question bank. Rather, it was the level Su Mu had reached after just one viewing of the tutorial.
To be honest, achieving 4 points after a single viewing was quite impressive.
For most people, even after watching the tutorial two or three times, they might still be completely confused—understanding every word and every sentence when taken separately, but when put together, it might as well be an arcane text, turning their brains into a scrambled mess.
After all, the Earth-Rock Conversion Spell was among the most difficult questions in the question bank.
Su Mu's comprehension and understanding were actually not bad, thankfully not bringing shame to the transmigrators.
Although revisiting the tutorial could help improve one's understanding of the spell, thereby increasing the scoring, Su Mu chose not to do so.
Watching a tutorial could take up an entire hour, and he had thirty or forty more spells to learn with only 48 hours for the exam. To learn all the spells within this time frame, he couldn't afford to waste time rewatching.
Besides, he had a pay-to-win cheat; even if he only mastered knowledge worth 1 point, he could enhance it to 10 points—it was just a matter of spending more money.
Problems that money could solve weren't problems at all.
Su Mu was already acting high and mighty before he had even amassed a fortune.
So, he immediately raised his hand and swiped on the light screen, requesting to change the question.
A new spell from the Spiritual Plants major was promptly demonstrated and taught by the light screen.
It was hard to comment on Su Mu's luck; the difficulty of this new spell was not at all inferior to the Earth-Rock Conversion Spell—it was also among the toughest.
An ordinary examinee drawing just one of these questions would be considered extremely unlucky, but he managed to draw two in a row.
His luck was so bad it warranted a temple visit, perhaps even worse than not getting a flavor packet in instant noodles or going on a hundred tries without drawing a card.
Su Mu's streak of bad luck continued.
The third question... the fourth question... the fifth question...
Spiritual Plants major... beast taming major... divination major...
In each major, the three questions Su Mu drew were the most difficult in the question bank.
Even though he was drawing from the level 3 difficulty questions, the odds of consecutively drawing the hardest questions were astronomically low, yet he managed to encounter them. His luck was darker than that of an African chief; no wonder the Heavenly Father bestowed upon him a pay-to-win cheat. With his luck, how could he change his fate without spending money?
Su Mu didn't realize he was incredibly unlucky and thought all examinees faced questions of this difficulty level.
So he was shocked: "Is this the difficulty of the specialized subject examination? Without a pay-to-win cheat, I'd probably find it hard to learn more than three spells in 48 hours, right? It seems that those who can get into a cultivation university are truly formidable!"
Little did he know, the spells other examinees drew were much simpler in both difficulty and complexity compared to his.
This was his karma.
Su Mu kept changing examination questions, swiftly moving on to a different major after completing a set of three.
Although the recruitment teachers were no longer paying attention to Su Mu, his distinctive and flamboyant maneuvers were hard to ignore.
Shangqing Palace.
It was deep into the night, and the outside was pitch black, but the palace was brightly lit.
The examinees were studying non-stop in the learning space, and these recruitment teachers had to stay up all night with them.
"Whoosh!"
A flying sword broke through the sky, startling the birds in the woods into chaotic flight.
The flying sword shot straight to the palace gate and hovered motionlessly, a voice emanated from the sword, "Dear teachers, your takeout has arrived, please collect it."

Tied to the sword were several bags containing more than a dozen cups of milk tea and some pastries, still steaming hot.
This was the new delivery method introduced by Ele.me — flying sword express.

Aside from the expensive delivery fee, there were no other drawbacks.
"Come on, have some food to fill your stomachs... I can't host you for a barbecue or spicy crayfish here, so this will have to do for now. Once the exams are over, I'll treat you all to a proper meal to show my hospitality."
The recruitment teacher from Qingcheng Mountain Cultivation University, Wen Wubin, was calling out to the teachers from other institutions while with a light wave of his hand, the cups of milk tea and pastries lifted out of the bags by an invisible force and floated in front of each recruitment teacher.
"Thanks."
Wu Jian, a recruitment teacher from Southwest University of Science, Technology, and Cultivation, took a sip of his milk tea and suddenly glanced at a corner of the light screen.
It was Su Mu, who had been forgotten until now.
At this moment, Su Mu was studying a new spell.
Wu Jian couldn't help but let out a 'huh'.
"What's up?"
Lin Yang, a recruitment teacher from Huaxi Alchemical Pill Specialized University, with a donut in his mouth, leaned in curiously.
Wu Jian pointed at Su Mu, "Over two hours ago, I took a glance at this examinee. He was learning a spell from the Feng Shui Major. How did he switch to learning spells from the Flying Sword Major so quickly?"
"He's drawing from the level 3 question bank, right? Is he learning that fast?" Lin Yang was somewhat surprised.
In the eyes of the recruitment teachers, Su Mu had average talent and was drawing from the most difficult question bank; logically, his progress should be slow.
"Who are you guys talking about? Hey, why has he started learning flying sword spells now? I saw him studying body refining a few hours ago."
Another teacher joined the conversation.
A few words later, more teachers were drawn into the discussion.
"Wasn't he studying Spiritual Plants? I saw him do that earlier."
"I also saw him studying divination, and I think he did beast taming too."
"With so many major subjects, how could he possibly learn them all? Just watching them would take ten to twenty hours, right?"
"Could it be that all the questions he drew were the easiest? That's not possible; he is drawing from the level 3 difficulty question bank. Even the simplest questions can't be learned after just one viewing."
The recruitment teachers grew more curious.
Since they had some free time, the teachers decided to use the retrospective function to check how many questions Su Mu had drawn in the past twenty or so hours, and what those questions were.
After reviewing, they were all taken aback.
Not because of Su Mu's learning abilities, but because of his luck.
"In the last twenty-some hours, this kid has switched through seven Majors and over twenty questions. And each question was the most difficult in the question bank!"
"Such bad luck, he's unrivaled in that regard."
"No wonder he kept switching questions; he probably didn't understand a single one."
"It's a shame his luck is so terrible, switching around only to find the most difficult ones every time. Looking at his blank expression, he must be feeling tormented, questioning his life choices."
"How pitiful!"
