Chapter 7: You... Are Not Human
The next morning dawned.
Yu Sheng glanced briefly at the tidy living room and the medicines returned to their places, maintaining his daily routine without lingering.
Cooking, eating.
Each bite of food was taken slowly, chewed thoroughly as if it were a solemn act.
No school for the next few days.
As usual, those who have just undergone an awakening needed to absorb demon crystals to enhance their overall physical condition, including the eggs that were hatching.
All of this could be done at home.
Of course, if one had the means, they could attend special training classes designed to help the newly awakened absorb crystals.
Mostly, though, these were a waste of money.
After washing the dishes, Yu Sheng put on his coat, opened the door, and stepped out.
This remote city was mostly populated by the elderly, while the youth, carrying their ideals and ambitions, traveled alone, often dying in foreign lands.
The city wasn’t too large; Yu Sheng walked about two streets away and turned into a corner.
There was a grocery store.
The merchant, a middle-aged man, seemed bored due to the lack of customers, yawning intermittently.
Upon seeing Yu Sheng enter, the middle-aged man merely glanced over casually: "The stuff’s on the table."
Yu Sheng didn’t respond, heading straight to a worn little table and picking up a cloth bag.
"Hey, I’ve repaid your favor now."
The middle-aged man turned off the television casually, and when he looked at Yu Sheng again, his expression had turned serious, revealing the left side of his face.
A fierce scar ran from his forehead to his chin.
It looked like a centipede was resting on his face, chilling to behold.
"Mm."
Yu Sheng responded softly, looking at the middle-aged man: "See you."
With that, he left, carrying the greasy bag.
Watching Yu Sheng’s retreating figure, the middle-aged man cracked a smile. Although he was smiling, his eyes showed no emotion: "Won’t be seeing you for a while, then."
He stood up, straightened his clothes, and walked out of the grocery store, gradually disappearing.
Inside the back of the store lay an obese, bald man, clearly unconscious.

"In Xinhai, several demon beasts suddenly appeared in the city district, causing heavy casualties!"
At the entrance of a shop on the street, the owner was idly basking in the sun, scrolling through his phone when a news alert popped up. He jumped up, exclaiming in shock.
A crowd quickly gathered around, engaging in a lively discussion.
"Even though Xinhai is a remote area, they do have a Demon Exorcism Pavilion, right?"
"How could something like this happen?" one person asked.
As the shop owner continued scrolling through the news, he shook his head, "The news says that there was turmoil outside the city on that day, suspected to be demon clan activity. Most of the Demon Exorcism Pavilion staff were not in the city at the time."
"Ah..."
"The situation is becoming increasingly unstable. I hope nothing chaotic happens here."
"Hopefully not."
"With more demon clan infiltrating recently, could it be that Demon-Suppressing Pass is no longer holding up?"
The group murmured among themselves, their conversation laden with a tone of pessimism.
Since the resurgence of spiritual energy a century ago, the demon clan also rose in power, making the human living environment increasingly difficult.
Fortunately, the first batch of awakened individuals stood up and, at the cost of their own flesh and blood, established four passes.

Demon-Suppressing Pass, Dawn Pass, Dome Pass, Death Pass.
These four passes, like impregnable barriers, kept the demon clan at bay. Additionally, at intervals, human experts are stationed to prevent any demon beasts from invading human territories.
And Mo Pavilion, that is the highest organization of the human race.

Back at home, Yu Sheng opened the cloth bag, revealing three semi-transparent crystals inside, through which one could see faint red filaments.
This was the energy contained within the crystals.
It was also the essence condensed by the demon beasts after devouring human vital energy.
Locking the door and drawing the curtains tightly, Yu Sheng carefully set up a thin wire at the entrance, the other end of which was connected to a small hand crossbow.
Should anyone open the door and enter, the crossbow would fire immediately.
Similarly, he left similar traps at the window.
After setting everything up, Yu Sheng walked to a corner of the room where he could remain unseen from the doorway. Sitting down, he then took the crystal in his hands and slowly closed his eyes.
Inside the crystal, the red filaments seemed to come to life, swaying continuously and streaming into the palm of Yu Sheng's hand.
Above Yu Sheng’s head, the phantom of an egg appeared again, its nine golden lines making it seem even more mystical.
These lines began to spread slowly, as if they intended to completely envelop the egg.
...
Not far from the Demon-Suppressing Pass, deep within a mountain range.
An old man in a loose white robe was sitting cross-legged at the summit. Suddenly, he opened his eyes, a sharp glint flashing through them.
"This path is closed."
He stated simply, his gaze falling towards the base of the mountain.
A few individuals in red robes abruptly halted their steps. The leader, a handsome young man, looked up at the old man on the peak and smiled warmly, seemingly harmless: "Elder, we merely wish to pass through."
"We should help each other as members of the same race."
The old man slowly shook his head and repeated, "This path is closed."
"What if I insist on passing through here today?"
The smile gradually faded from the young man’s face as he gazed at the old man with a hint of amusement.
"Death."
The old man’s voice remained calm, as if merely stating a fact. As he spoke, a phantom of a scepter appeared behind him, adorned with seven uniquely shaped crystals, each sparkling brilliantly.
The plants in the forest rustled without any wind, swaying gently as though they had come to life.
"I was only joking."
"The Pantheon Sect has always tirelessly served our race without any secondary motives."
"How could we possibly dispute with an elder like yourself?"
"I shall take my leave."
With great respect, the young man bowed deeply to the old man before slowly retreating with his group.
"Did I say you could leave?"
The old man spoke again as the scepter materialized from the phantom and planted itself beside him in the dirt.
The light from the seven crystals grew even more dazzling.
"Elder... is there anything else you wish to instruct?" asked the young man, his head bowed. A sinister glint flickered in his eyes, but his tone remained as respectful as before.
"I just wanted to tell you to go back to your Divine Throne and consider a name change."
"Calling yourselves a Cult would be quite fitting."
"You people do not count as part of the human race."
"If it weren't for the fact that I need to guard this place and should not engage in combat, you would already be dead."
The old man watched the young man calmly, his words delivered with a detached tone.
