Chapter 19: I Too Wish to Be a Parasite
For a moment, the Driver couldn't help but suspect there was a problem... perhaps with himself.
Though their reasons differed, Yu Sheng ultimately gave the Driver the answer he wanted to hear.
"What are you doing here?"
"With your skills, you shouldn't need my protection," the Driver said with a touch of helplessness.
Yu Sheng shook his head. "Why stay vigilant outside when one can comfortably lie down in bed?"
With that, Yu Sheng collapsed onto the floor.
But quickly, Yu Sheng sprang to his feet, looking at the monitors: "Can you make me a copy of this recording?"
Monitor A and B were momentarily stunned, then nodded subconsciously.
"As an apprentice."
"During the assessment period, not knowing the answers and mistaking it for a real crisis, saving a teammate should also qualify for a bonus."
"Article Sixteen of the New School Policy."
"Right!"
"Thirty thousand per person!"
For a moment, Yu Sheng's eyes sparkled exceptionally bright in the dim room.
"Twelve people, that's three hundred and sixty thousand."
"If I'm injured, there's even an additional aid fund."
"Twenty thousand..."
As he spoke, Yu Sheng abruptly stood up, pushed open the door, and left.
The Driver, clearly still not fully comprehending Yu Sheng's mysterious maneuvers, was stunned for a couple of seconds before he called out to Yu Sheng's retreating figure: "That's cheating!"
"Blatantly extorting money from Mo Pavilion!"
"Utter audacity!"
"Is this fair to the other students?"
"Self-serving!"
"I will definitely report this to Mo Pavilion and firmly combat such corrupt practices, eradicating parasites like you."
The Driver's expression was very serious as he spoke.
Utterly earnest.
Even the room seemed to reverberate with an aura of justice.
Monitor A and B, watching the Driver's figure, couldn't help but show a hint of respect in their eyes. No wonder... he is a man of merit.
A pillar of the human race!
Truly deserving!
"Split it with you."
Yu Sheng's figure had already vanished into the darkness, leaving only his words echoing in the room.
The previously serious Driver suddenly switched to a smiling face: "Alright then, pleasure doing business with you! I'll handle this end!"
With that, the Driver casually closed the door.
In front of the stunned expressions of Monitor A and B, the Driver looked at them with an unfriendly, even dangerous gaze and said lightly, "As outstanding clerks, when you return to Mo Pavilion, you should know how to report this matter to the higher-ups."
He rubbed his fists, producing a crisp sound.
Like a wicked wolf eyeing a little rabbit.
"Aren't you... weren't you supposed to rigorously combat this unhealthy practice and eradicate the parasites?" Monitor A asked, swallowing nervously and speaking cautiously.
"Heh..."
"I too wish to be a parasite, okay?" the Driver sneered, retorting with a question.
Monitor A and B, seeing the increasingly stern look on the Driver's face, nodded frantically.
Pleased, the Driver patted their shoulders and then flopped back onto the bed, no longer interested in watching the monitors.
Since Yu Sheng had left, there was no need to continue monitoring.
"May I ask something?" Monitor A ventured, still somewhat conflicted. Although he was just a logistical clerk at Mo Pavilion, he possessed a strong sense of integrity, and even at the risk of a beating, he stubbornly voiced his question.
"You have earned merit before."
"Even if it's just the lowest level of cloud pattern, it still signifies that you have contributed to the human race."
"But today's incident involves harming Mo Pavilion's property."

"And damaging the interests of the human race."
"You..."
Monitor A was utterly perplexed.
This was beyond his understanding, which had been consistent over the years.
Aren't heroes supposed to embody integrity?
The Driver scoffed, "In your eyes, what should merit look like?"
"Fighting bravely, charging forward without regard for personal gain?"
"With no money, how am I supposed to cultivate?"
"Without cultivating, how do I level up?"
"If I don't level up, how can I fight demons?"
"What if my weapon breaks?"
"What if my vehicle is destroyed, do I not buy another?"
"Surely I can't be expected to carry you two with me to hack at demons, can I?"
"Human-shaped battle axes?"
"Me spinning you around while you bite the demon?"
The Driver shifted to a more comfortable position and lit a cigarette. As the smoke drifted around him, his eyes grew slightly hazy: "Sometimes, it really isn’t about looking down on you clerks in the rear."
"Some things, you assume too much."
"There's a phrase for it, let me think..."
"Oh, right!"
"Idealism."
Flicking the ash from his cigarette, the Driver continued, "You always think the world should be as you imagine it."
"Heroes, they should fight to the death."
"Let me tell you, that’s foolish, utterly foolish. If your death could buy time for the plans of those behind you, then it’s a death well spent!"
"But if not, then you better run as fast as you can, to avoid ending up as a piece of dung in a demon beast's stomach, excreted without even knowing which part is you."
With a hint of mockery, and perhaps recalling something, a touch of sadness flickered in his eyes, and even his voice lowered.
"The human race has too few resources, nowhere near enough."
"All the resources that can enhance strength are on the demon beasts, but are demon beasts so easy to kill?"
"Everyone wants to become stronger, to become a hero, but what if there aren’t enough resources?"
"Fight, fight with your life on the line."
"Do you know how many people have died in the wilderness for a single demon crystal?"
"Just as you said, this is corruption."
"But as I grow stronger and head to Demon-Suppressing Pass, I can kill more demons, save more people."
"If I'm not going to have a good end anyway, why not enjoy a thrilling life?"
"Those who can't outcompete you for resources, do you think they could be more effective than you at Demon-Suppressing Pass?"
"Some rules are tacitly allowed by Mo Pavilion."
As he finished his cigarette, the Driver’s mood for talking faded. He casually tossed the cigarette butt onto the ground, leaving one last remark: "Heroes are not as clean as you think, but they're also not as despicable as you imagine."
Closing his eyes, he hummed a tune contentedly, appearing quite at ease.
Even now, he was already planning what resources to buy with the upcoming windfall of over 100,000 to enhance his strength.
Heard that a new batch of tiger demon blood has just been shipped to the provincial city, capable of strengthening the physique.
Level four demon crystals are also valuable treasures.
Maybe they could further enhance personal strength.
But...
Can't afford them.
Maybe keep in touch with this kid?
Always felt that with this guy’s smarts, making a fortune was likely, and by collaborating while his strength and backing were still lacking, might just get a bite of the pie!
Otherwise, once he becomes stronger, he'll probably ignore the likes of others.
He's exactly the type to make a fortune quietly.
Suddenly, the Driver's mind became active, and he even started thinking about how to subtly ask for Yu Sheng’s contact information.
