Chapter 21: Unorthodox Methods
"Can it really be done this way..."
Even as the ash fell to the ground unnoticed, the Driver said blankly, looking utterly foolish.
"But..."
"This is going to be tough."
"It's too far-fetched; I'm afraid even my big brother can't cover for this."
The Driver rubbed his temples in distress and took a deep drag of his cigarette, his face creased with worry. After a long while, he made up his mind, slammed the table, and exclaimed, "Damn it, if worse comes to worst, I'll just give half to the boss!"
"If this doesn't work out, there'll be no more chances for cooperation in the future."
"I'm just afraid the boss might poach the person directly and dump me..."
"No, no, that shouldn't happen."
The Driver kept reassuring himself, the cigarette quickly reduced to a butt, which he tossed on the floor in irritation.
Yet his agitation was still palpable.
Monitor A and another, wisely chose to remain silent, like two statues capable only of breathing.
Finally, Yu Sheng concluded his elaborate speech that lasted several minutes.
He looked towards where the monitors were positioned.
The Driver, still somewhat dazed, took a moment to snap back to reality.
Yu Sheng frowned slightly.
Then he jumped off the dog demon and stood again in front of Zhao Zicheng and the others.
"There are such ferocious demon beasts, deceiving my comrades!"
"If I hadn't arrived in time..."
Not just the Driver was stunned by this scene, but the dog demon was as well.
In that moment, reason overcame its animal instincts, and it looked bewildered at Yu Sheng, the very person who was about to kill it.
"Fuck!"
"He thinks he's making a movie!"
The Driver finally came to his senses, frantically operating the monitor controls, shaking wildly as if having a seizure.
And with that, Yu Sheng's voice abruptly stopped.
The dog demon, eyes reddened, snarled viciously and lunged at Yu Sheng once more.
Then it met the tragic end of its brief life.
If it could reminisce in its final moments, it might recall...
'Becoming a demon, fortunate indeed.'
'With great vigor, I went hunting, only to be captured by a formidable man.'
'I was released.'
'Renewed with a fierce resolve, I went hunting again.'
'Encountered another formidable man, and perished.'
Perhaps this was its life, short yet spectacular.
Liu Qingfeng was sitting quietly in the corner, watching the entire scene unfold. His gaze flickered across the monitor, contemplative.
The other students...
At this point, they didn't have much else to think about.
They regarded Yu Sheng’s erratic behavior as normal.
If Yu Sheng suddenly started acting serious one day, laughing and chatting with everyone, they might suspect that he had been possessed.
Perhaps by a demon beast.
Absolutely!
No interrogation needed, just eliminate him on the spot, no risk of a wrongful judgment.
...
Inside the monitoring room.
Monitor A's expression changed several times, and finally, with a clenched jaw, he once again challenged fate.
"I still don’t understand!"
"Maybe what you said before is true."
"But at least they genuinely care about humanity, willing to sacrifice and serve."
"However, Yu Sheng is clearly selfish. I doubt he cares about humanity at all. By cooperating with him, aren’t you just nurturing a true demon?"

"If you can’t provide me with an explanation I can accept, I’m willing to risk losing my position to report the truth."
Monitor A spoke with great seriousness.
He even dared to look directly into the Driver’s eyes. Though still somewhat timid, he did not look away.
The Driver laughed.
But this time, his gaze at Monitor A lacked the previous mockery and gradually became serious: "Whether he is selfish or not, as long as the rules of Mo Pavilion remain unchanged, he will continue to save humanity."
"So what if he is selfish?"
"I know you think that since Mo Pavilion is protecting humanity and countless pioneers have sacrificed for the sake of humanity, future generations should do the same."
"This is something pioneers are qualified to say, something the countless soldiers at Demon-Suppressing Pass can say."
"But... the civilians who have always been protected, including those of you in the rear enjoying a salary and comfortable jobs, you have no right to say this."
"It’s not right to stand on a moral high ground and demand others to risk their lives. That’s not the way of humanity."
The Driver slowly shook his head: "He likes money, so give him money. He'll go kill demon beasts for it."
"Save people for money, and he'll do that too."
"As long as he desires something and sees his own value, Mo Pavilion will naturally tailor unique rules for him."
"Even if one day he has no desires or needs, and even if he turns against humanity, there will be those from Mo Pavilion ready to deal with him."
"But as long as he hasn't turned, he remains one of humanity."
"Even more, if he saves people and kills demon beasts, he is a hero."
"Even if he is a hero driven by selfish motives."
"Even if in his entire life, he only saves one person, that still surpasses most of humanity who stand on a moral high ground to criticize others, yet do nothing themselves."
"Of course, you're not included in that."
"You... have the spirit of humanity, I believe."
"I just want to say, this is the charm of Mo Pavilion."
"Teaching without discrimination."
"Selfishness can still be guided towards good, but a useless person... is just useless."
This was still one of the Driver's serious and solemn moments today.
His words continued to echo in Monitor A's ears for a long time.
After a while, Monitor A finally exhaled deeply, and with sincerity, he bowed slightly to the Driver: "I have learned a lot."
"Perhaps after this, I should quit my job as a Clerk and visit Demon-Suppressing Pass."
The Driver nodded in satisfaction, then quickly reverted to his less serious demeanor, chuckling: "But you, a rookie, would most likely get instantly killed at Demon-Suppressing Pass."
"Better join the Reserve Forces first and train for a couple of years."
"At least the chances of getting instantly killed will be smaller."
Monitor A looked at the Driver with some skepticism, suddenly feeling... that the Driver's serious long speech earlier might just have been a way to poach him.
But soon he smiled wryly.
With his own level of ability, he wasn't that significant.
As for Monitor B, who had been silent the whole time, he was just clenching his fists tightly, his eyes flashing with excitement and fervor, yet he remained quiet.
He didn't speak.
...
"Has the convoy passed through?"
In the provincial capital, Pavilion Master Lin dialed a number and asked calmly.
"Yes, personnel from the Dark Pavilion are already following them."
"They can act at any moment."
A middle-aged voice responded on the other end.
Pavilion Master Lin glanced at his watch, noting that there were only twelve minutes left until the agreed time: "Follow them for ten more minutes, and then, regardless of whether we've caught the big fish, wrap it up."
"Understood."
The voice on the other end responded and then hung up.
Pavilion Master Lin casually set down the phone and turned on his computer, his brow slightly furrowed, alternating between tension and solemnity.
Even though he usually dealt with the Pantheon Sect with an air of nonchalance, he now seemed to be facing a severe choice.
On the screen.
There was a peaceful little courtyard.
The garden was filled with vegetables that were constantly attacking the demon beasts that kept surging towards them.
Occasionally, a little sun would slowly rise.
